The Pozieres Remembrance Association held their memorial service to honour the fallen at the Australia 1st Division Memorial. Mr Barry Gracey, President of the Pozieres Remembrance Association greeted the many Australians, Pozieres locals and dignatories including the Pozieres Mayor Mr Bernard DeLattre and his wife and Major General David Chalmers AO and his wife.
During the memorial, Barry passionately retold the story of Pozieres and the sacrifice of the Australians but also of the mateship between French and many of the Commonwealth countries.
The wreath laying ceremony was special with the sounds of the bag pipes playing while the wreaths were laid. The moment was so special to so many that had travelled halfway around the world from Australia to pay their respects to those that gave their lives. There were many RSL’s representing the various states that had been great supporters of the Pozieres Remembrance Association. The flowers laid were living pots which will be distributed after to the village to proudly display in their window boxes.
At the conclusion of the service The Ode from the poem “For The Fallen” by R L Binyon was delivered by a Western Australian Kelvin Liddiard, President of the Victoria Park RSL subbranch WA, and the crowd joined in with heads bowed.
The official Australian government ceremony will be televised on the ABC channel 21 or 24 at midnight – 1.15am.
We thank everyone for their support and involvement in this event.
